Planning and design (main visual, venue logo, signage, exhibition captions, etc.) for the “Future Snow City,” an experimental urban installation presented at Odori 2-chome, one of six main venues comprising the triennial Sapporo International Art Festival.
A sky unmarred by power lines, a powdery silver winter wonderland. A chance to make an information reset.
Envisioning signage as a new form of urban infrastructure, Flowplateaux created functional venue signage for the Future Snow City with essential information arranged on a horizontal axis by color and height. Visitors could interact with the signs using all five senses at the installation venue, created in collaboration with Nikken Sekkei.
Signs were grouped into two infrastructural categories: signs pertaining to the exhibition (maps, artwork captions, etc.) and signs necessary for the city (traffic signs, etc.) The respective functions of these signs were visually reflected by the color and height of the display racks, which were made with pipe.
Pipe is a familiar material often found in parks and other public spaces. As a result, the display units felt at home in the venue, evoking the excitement of playground equipment as a welcome, rather than temporary, part of the landscape.
