The Nara International Film Festival, directed by filmmaker Naomi Kawase as Executive Director, was held with a newly created key visual for its 2024 edition. Based on this visual concept, we designed the poster, pamphlet, T-shirt, and website for the festival. In 2024, it explores the theme “Dialogue with_,” focusing on the idea that when differing perspectives and opinions intersect, new discoveries can emerge. Art Director Hiroyasu Kimura’s visual identity expresses this concept through a design system in which two opposing objects overlap to generate a variety of “dialogue” patterns. Rooted in creativity and a human-centered approach, the design enhances the user experience by encouraging individual interpretation and reflection, balancing high aesthetic quality with usability.
Since its inception in 2010, the festival has been held biennially and celebrates its eighth edition this year. Under the vision of Executive Director Naomi Kawase, the festival has established a sustainable cultural platform in Nara—a city rich in history and heritage—where diverse audiences can gather and engage. It continues to provide learning opportunities and inspiration for younger generations, reinforcing its significant social impact. Furthermore, through partnerships with events such as the Berlin International Film Festival and other Asian festivals, it contributes to the growth of film culture across Asia. Beyond commercial success, the festival consistently generates long-term cultural and societal value.
