An immersive artistic experience that stimulated the five senses captivated over 130,000 visitors to Yokosuka.
SENSE ISLAND / LAND is a participatory art festival themed around the reawakening of human senses—sight, sound, and touch—set against the layered backdrop of Yokosuka’s history, urban fabric, and natural environment.
Rather than relying on standalone logos or posters, the project developed a flexible design system based on the rhythm of Morse code, which changes form depending on the medium and viewing distance. It functioned as a visual communication tool that bridged art and tourism, city and nature, the everyday and the extraordinary.
Reflecting the unique character of Yokosuka—a city on the Miura Peninsula with roots in both the former Imperial Navy and a current U.S. military base—the project featured a series of installations scattered across the urban landscape that utilized the local culture of light and sound. Through these works, it extracted narratives from the region’s history, geography, and international identity, allowing art to act as a lens through which the essence of the land was revealed.
This visual identity, which balances visibility, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, was designed as a sustainable visual foundation that could be shared and utilized by organizers, visitors, and the local community alike. As a result, the festival gained recognition as a new model for the integration of art and design in Asia.
